From Corporate Maven to Business Owner

For 30 years, I have worked for corporate big and small. Working my way up or working my way to the middle, but never above the median. I was trained and mentored by highly intelligent, gifted people, with educations bigger than mine; I listened, asked questions and took lots of notes. “You too, could become a CEO one day,” they told me. Yet, the road is closed, construction signs along the way, but always a detour sign! A corporate possession you become, coveted.

Find the Open Spaces

Since we've launched our live interview series a few weeks ago, we've talked to some pretty amazing women and each interview has inspired some really amazing "ah-ha moments" as our favorite Ms. Oprah likes to say.  Today we had a call with Heather Thomson, founder of Yummie Tummie and cast member of the hit show The Real Housewives of New York and we hung up feeling so inspired! If you didn't hear the interview - download it and listen, asap!

I love to hear the story behind a business, because it usually makes that product much more meaningful to me. I own a few Yummie Tummie tank tops that I've had for a few years now and never knew of the incredible woman and story behind this little shapewear secret of mine.

Heather had a lot of great nuggets for us - we talked about mission statements, strategy, being naive and having unfailing belief in your business. But one in particular really stood out to me. She said she always thinks back to the days when she was a soccer player, her strategy was to "always find the open space." She carried this with her to her business and wow - what a concept.

A lot of the time, when we think about starting a business, we might stay with what's safe. "Well, I work in marketing, I'll open a marketing consultancy." "Well, I'm an accountant, so I'll open an accounting firm." What if you searched for "open space?" I love this concept because it forces you to start looking in corners you wouldn't have normally looked into. What about the open space between accounting and marketing? What about the open space between food service and data entry? What about the open space between the spa and car service?

Stretch your mind to find these open spaces - let it take you down an unfamiliar road and be comfortable in that for a little while. I think you'll like what happens!

xoxo,
Stephanie

What I Learned from Launching

Today, we launched our Chic Siren membership program at Chic CEO. Since inception, we've been passionate about bringing the information women need to get a business started for free - so I've pushed back on introducing something like this for a long time. Providing women with free business information is something we believe in and it's something we'll always provide. However, it's time.

Time To Get Out

Yesterday, I was in Target picking up a few things and as I was walking around, I passed 3 different women who were all dressed up, just coming from work and all on their phones. I heard "Well, she needs to understand that she can't do that because...." and "I can't believe she said that..." and "I don't understand why they let her..."

99% is a Bitch. 100% is a Breeze.

We've all made promises to ourselves, broken them and then tried again. "I'm going to lose 15 pounds, starting tomorrow!" "I'm never smoking again." "I will wake up at 5:30am every day." With good intentions, we slip a bit and fall off the wagon. Or as a dear friend of mine says, "I didn't fall off the wagon, I James Bond jump-n-rolled off."

How to Create A Cash Mob

A cash mob is a group of people who assemble at a local business and all buy items from that business. The purpose of these mobs is to support both the local businesses and the overall community. They may also serve a secondary purpose in providing social opportunities. They were inspired by flash mobs. The cash mob is related to the carrotmob, which supports companies for ethical, mainly pro-environmental actions.
