Soraya Darabi - Chic Interview

Written by chicceo Published in

In a  world of ever-changing fashion trends, we have all fell victim to purchasing poor quality, non-earth friendly clothing items. Today's society has seen a shift in these kinds of purchases as fashion consumers are becoming more and more aware of the things they are putting on their bodies. Soraya Darabi's online shopping site, Zady, is going beyond everyday trends by selling classic pieces that are high-quality and organically made. In an interview with Soraya, she shares her three reasons why sustainability is the future of business.

Surprising Secret About You

My secret.... when I'm stressed or can't sleep, I cook.  Sometimes I make tomato sauce at 4 am. It's calming.

3 Reasons Why Sustainability Is The Future of Business

- Millennials are going to change the face of the brand world, one voice at a time. Just as BCG. To be a successful brand in 2014 and beyond, you must engage in two-way dialogue and ask your customers what they think - then use that feedback to make informed decisions.  Social-media savvy certainly helps a business like ours understand our customer and react to their growing needs.

- The world is waking up to the fact that fast-fashion is simply not good for us. Mass production of garments results in toxic environmental practices, and it threatens workers’ rights. Sustainably focused brands that emphasize beautiful construction - and not simply trends, made cheaply - are emerging on the landscape. A commitment to style, process and our bold mission is what sets Zady apart from the pack. Call it our secret weapon.

- The organic or slow fashion movement is analogous to the slow food movement of the 80's, 90's and 2000's. We see so many parallels between the way consumers became educated and then empowered to buy organic food and what's happening now in opposition to clothing that is bad for us. Change is on the horizon.

Book Recommendation:

I recommend to all entrepreneurs "Making Ideas Happen" by Scott Belsky. For those who believe in our mission at Zady, please read "Overdressed" by Elizabeth Cline.

What Would You Challenge The Chic CEO Community To Do Today?

I challenge all business owners to have a strong mission and point of view. It's one thing to launch a technical platform that you think is neat. But gizmos are over-rated. Try to begin your business plan with a bold statement of how you will transform the world for the better. Now I know from experience it makes waking up each day so rewarding and work feel like anything but.
