The Difference

Caution: Tough Love And Lots Of Capitals Ahead.

Yesterday, I was sitting at my desk getting really frustrated about an internal issue I had to deal with (just like every business owner does) when a Google Alert came through my email and it was an article titled "5 Inspiring Blogs You Should Read Every Day." I looked to see what publication is was and stared at the word "Cosmopolitan" in disbelief.

 

"Cosmo?" I yelped. "THE Cosmo?" 

 

Sure enough - there was my mug great big above the fold as the first blog to follow in this article. Last week, I received a Google Alert to let me know that Chic CEO was named #9 in the Top 50 Best Websites for Entrepreneurs by Inc., and the local San Diego Union Tribune sent a photographer to my office to photograph me for a piece they are doing. Not to mention, last week I doubled my monthly income. (Stay with me here - the "boasting" will subside and my point will emerge, I promise) 

 

All of these things are AWESOME, right? YES! 

 

However, as I reflected on the fact that I've wanted to get a mention in Cosmopolitan since the inception of Chic CEO - I realize that it's been years I've held this wish.

 

YEARS. 

 

I filed the Articles of Organization for Chic CEO in June of 2009. The Chic CEO website didn't go live until December of 2010. Now, in Q4 of 2014 - it finally feels like the momentum we've been working towards is snowballing. I will admit that I felt this way last year too, but this year it's even more compounded, and I'm sure next year will completely blow my mind. The traction we're seeing is a result of years of strategic steps and missteps that have lead to mini and major wins. Almost 5 years! 

 

5 years of working my tail off alongside my team to build momentum. 5 years of planning, making mistakes, and seeing what works and what doesn't. With 70,000 of you in our network now - I've seen one major difference in those of you who build traction, see momentum, make more money and the ones who don't. And there is one major difference that divides you.

 

ACTION. 

 

I talk a lot about action, but DAMMIT LADIES - it's the difference between making this thing fly or letting it die. 5 years from today - where will your business be if you don't start taking action NOW? I'll tell you - it'll be exactly where it is today.

 

- If you think you have to have all of your ducks in a row, you don't. 

 

- If you think you have to have a perfect website to start, you don't. 

 

- If you think you need capital to go out and make it happen, you don't. 

 

- If you think you need a team of people, you don't. 

 

 

You need to get up, get moving, and take some action. Invest in yourself, get a business coach, an accountability partner, SOMETHING - to help you take action. ANY action. 

 

In 2009, I did a figure competition. (If you don't know what that is - look it up - it's a fascinating sport) and there were days when I didn't feel like eating another egg white or I didn't feel like going to the gym. But I knew that the other women I was competing against were eating their egg whites, and probably finishing up their workout. I always felt that sense of urgency that I could slack off if I wanted to - but the people I would be surrounded by on stage wouldn't - and it would show. It's the same with your business. You can't work out once and get a six pack. You can't make one sales call and make a million dollars. It doesn't work that way, sister.

 

 

- You might think your new business is suddenly going to attract 100 new customers tomorrow - best of luck with that. You can bet I'll be out pounding the pavement finding 100 new customers. 

 

- You might think your new website is magically going to get 10,000 new visitors next month - I'll be networking, emailing, speaking, running campaigns to make sure 10,000 new visitors come to my site next month. 

 

- You might think an investor will happen upon your business and offer up your first seed round of funding - I'll be smiling and dialing all day, attending pitch competitions and networking to get that seed round. 

 

- You might think a national media outlet will think you're interesting enough to feature - I'll be in their face showing them how interesting we are. 

 

 

Thinking vs. Working

 

 

- My client, Zlata Sushchik, founder of SexyFit.com and I had a meeting a week and a half ago and already she's planned an event, written her first ebook, and is in talks with HuffingtonPost about becoming a contributor. DANG!

 

- Another client, Mackenzie Molinari, founder of SheAspires.org, she tightened up her target market and as a result increased her membership by 100% after our first call.

 

- Ashley West, my youngest client, has created a prototype, found a manufacturer and is about to launch her first crowdfunding campaign for her new product. 

 

 

ACTION. These ladies are taking massive amounts of action. Will they make mistakes? HELL YES. Will that stop them? HELL NO. 

 

They know that in order for them to make their dream come true, to get their business thriving, they need to work. They need to move. They need to skip happy hour sometimes to write ad copy. They need to take a full Saturday when the would rather go to the beach (Stephanie raises her hand) so they can record some videos. They know that they need to be strategic with their time and attention in order to make moves that will impact their business 5 years from today. 

 

You don't have to have the right answer, you just have to be willing to try an action and modify your course if needed. Just start.

 

If you started taking action 5 years ago - where would you be now? 

 

Now, where are you going to be in 5 years? 

 

Put down the remote/cigarette/credit card (aka: distraction) and get to work.
