What can small businesses offer to employees besides benefits and perks?

Written by LauraRenner Published in

Sometimes I hear small business owners wonder how they can compete against their larger competitors for talent. They think they cannot get the best talent because they do not offer the same benefits and perks as do their larger competitors.

Here’s what I have to say to that:

A cow giving a raspberry

Just because you don’t have the traditional benefits and perks to offer doesn’t mean you don’t have any. Think about what makes you different and offer that as a perk.

For instance, do your employees get to wear a lot of hats? Some people would love that opportunity. Additionally, that uniquely prepares them to move on to the bigger, corporate competitors. Use that as your advantage to attract people, train them well and then set them free.

Do your employees have a direct impact on the growth of your business? Many candidates would love that experience as opposed to being a small cog in a giant corporate wheel. Be willing to be open and transparent about the business with your employees. Highlight their impact in your job postings.

Do your employees work well together? People like to work with people that make them better. It’s harder for slackers to hide in a small business. Highlight the productivity of your team.

The key thing is to share what impact the new hire will have on your company, your clients and themselves!

My partner and I absolutely love your blog and find many of your post's to be exactly what I'm looking for.
Do you offer guest writers to write content in your case?
I wouldn't mind composing a post or elaborating on many of the
subjects you write about here. Again, awesome web log!
