Chic Interview: Tara Coleman, Clinical Nutritionist!

Tara Coleman, a clinical nutritionist tells us how she got her start in helping others lead a healthier life!

1. Why did you decide to work for yourself?

I had originally planned on going into business with two other women.  Unfortunately that plan fell apart almost immediately after I left my job.  It was a huge blow and forced me to really evaluate what I wanted to do with my life.  The two most logical options were to either go back into corporate America or start my own business.  I honestly had no idea what that meant but I knew I didn’t want to do what I was doing before and I was passionate about nutrition.  So it ultimately was a perfect storm of passion, naiveté and just a little pride that lead to me starting my own business!

2. Tell us what makes Tara Coleman, CN different.
I am a realist.  I believe that when it comes to nutrition the biggest question isn’t what we should eat but how.  I spend a lot of time with my clients learning about their food likes, dislikes, where they grocery shop, where they go out to eat, etc. so I can create a plan that works with their life rather than against it.

3. Now that you've gotten your business off the ground, what do you wish you would've known before you got started?
I wish that I had asked for help.  My strength is nutrition not marketing, accounting or SEO optimization.  Although you will want to do it all because you are on a tight budget it is a much better use of your time to focus on your strengths and give others the opportunity to do what they are good at.

4. What advice can you give to other Chic CEO's to help them on their entrepreneurial journey?
Spend more time doing and less time worrying about making mistakes. Of course you are going to make mistakes.  I missed the exit to my house the other day.  Does that mean that I can’t drive or should never go home?  Of course not.  It just makes me human.  People want to do business with people not with perfection.  As long as you are honest, take responsibility and learn from your mistakes you’ll be in good shape.

5. Why did you decide to become a Chic Siren?
The hardest part about being a business owner is that it can be lonely.  Most of the people around you have 9-5 jobs with such luxuries as steady paychecks and paid vacation.  They don’t understand the highs and lows of being your own boss.  Having a place where you can learn from and relate to other women is truly invaluable!
