Chic Interview: Kim Barnouin, author of Skinny Bitch

Chic CEO was lucky enough to get a little time with Kim Barnouin, author of Skinny Bitch

She tells us how the book came about and how you can win your own copy!

Why did you decide to work for yourself?

Around 2001 I was working as a waitress and had been going through some health problems. I didn’t have health insurance so I started researching the symptoms. My energy levels were awful, I was having brain fog, panic attacks and I felt like I had a hangover every day. During this research I came across some information on food allergies. The more research I did, the more I realized that my diet could have been contributing to my symptoms. I kept a food journal, started changing my diet slowly and found that my god - there’s something to it! At the time, my friend Laurie was into animal rights and was a vegetarian, so we decided to combine our efforts and it was such a great change for both of us that we had to spread the word.
We realized that we really do have a hand in bettering our own health by just eating right – so we decided to write a book. It was a crazy idea for both of us given we had no background in publishing. Luckily the universe was conspiring with us! We wrote a few chapters, got an agent, got rejected... a lot.  Finally in 2003, we got someone to bite. We wanted more than just a one hit wonder – we wanted to really spread the word so we knew two things for sure:  if we named it something catchy it would spread - if we got it in the celebrity world it would explode. So we named it Skinny Bitch solely to grab people’s attention.
I spent a lot of time going around to trendy LA stores trying to get the managers to pick up our book. About 6 months after I visited one store that agreed to carry the book, Victoria Beckham stopped in. She held up the book as she read the title and miraculously it was photographed!
From there the publishing company was really happy that we were doing well, but we really wanted to show people how to live healthy in all aspects of their life. So next was a cookbook, then there was a pregnancy book, work out videos and now I have my new cookbook out, Skinny Bitch, Ultimate Everyday Cooking and
It was all very planned out from the beginning to make it as big as possible – to make it a brand and a lifestyle that encompasses an entire way of living.
What did you want to do for work (besides waitress) before the book idea?
Before the book came about I didn’t know what I wanted to do with my life but I knew that I wanted to work for myself. I had to go through something difficult to help myself, then became passionate about it and then make a living with it.

What advice can you give to other Chic CEO's to help them on their entrepreneurial journey?

Having faith is really what it was about.
If you feel in your heart and you wake up and want it everyday then have faith. If it doesn’t light your fire, it can work - but for me its about my heart and soul. Find that passion and find a way to do that every day. Do what you love and the money will come. (In most cases.)
Take a leap of faith, stay true to your belief and work hard!
