As a business owner, you likely wear many hats: accounting, sales, marketing, and business development, just to name a few. If you aren’t already using apps to help streamline your tasks, now is the time to start. They can help you save time and free up resources, and many are inexpensive, if not free. They’re with you on the go because they are compatible with mobile devices, letting you run your business wherever you are.


What works for one person and industry might not work for someone else, so discover what’s best for you.   Below are a few that have proven widely useful across different work styles and industries, in two categories: apps that keep you organized and apps that keep you connected. Take a look. You may be missing out on some great tools that can help you save time as you run your business.


Apps to Keep You Organized

  • Evernote – Evernote helps you remember everything. You have so many moving parts in your business and with limited resources for delegation, the bulk of the tracking and remembering might fall only to you. Using Evernote, you can save anything – videos, files, images, notes, maps, itineraries – and then retrieve it when needed. Evernote also lets you share your items with colleagues and friends.
  • ALOQA – If you travel for business, this app can help you keep organized and informed on the go, especially in locations that are new to you. ALOQA uses GPS to determine your location, and then helps you find services commonly needed during travel, such as banks, transportation, restaurants and hotels. It helps save time spent looking for things, pointing you in the right direction and letting you focus on the goal of your travels – growing your business.


Apps to Keep You Connected

When it comes to staying connected as a business owner, social media is king. Consider the needs and goals of your business, because social media apps have their own strengths that lend themselves to different industries. Consult with colleagues and do some searching to determine where you want to put your focus. Remember, once you build a social presence, upkeep is important, so don’t bite off more than you can chew.

  • Twitter – Twitter has become an invaluable utility for business. It is relevant to virtually any industry. Users tweet 140-character messages that can include links, images and videos. Twitter is also useful for quickly receiving and responding to questions and feedback from your customers.
  • Facebook – With a longer character limit and more options, Facebook lets you build a company page that customers can “like” to receive updates. One item to keep in mind when using Facebook is that starting in 2015, Facebook will remove many company updates from users’ feeds, so if Facebook is your main method of communicating with your customers, you may need to rethink how you do this.
  • Pinterest – This app is a virtual pin board, allowing users to bookmark things they like and categorize them into different boards. A highly visual app, Pinterest can be used to distribute your images as well as curate your own boards on topics relevant to your industry. Followers can see what you pin and “re-pin” things they like, which is in turn shown to their followers.
  • Instagram – Born as a mobile app, Instagram is completely visual-based. Followers can view and “like” your photos, as well as share them and leave comments.
  • LinkedIn – Effective use of LinkedIn is one of the best things you can do to network online. In addition to connecting with colleagues, through LinkedIn you can share status updates and build your professional network. Remember, to be successful in these activities, make sure you have a clean, updated, complete profile, including current photo and plenty of recommendations. To take full advantage of LinkedIn’s networking abilities, consider the following:
  • LinkedIn Authorship – LinkedIn now has a feature that lets all members publish long-form posts, which are essentially blog posts. Publishing on LinkedIn is an excellent way to show thought leadership on a professional platform that is visible to like-minded professionals, including potential clients.
  • LinkedIn Groups – Participate in groups that align with your professional interests. Following and participating in these conversations gives you another platform to network and show leadership.
